Whistle Training

Whistle Training1

Using a Whistle for Recall
This training helps your dog return the moment they hear the whistle—handy in windy conditions or at a distance. Plus, any family member’s whistle sounds the same to the dog.

Whistle Training2

Starting the Whistle Cue
If the dog is scared of the whistle, give treats when you blow it.
When the dog is about 40–80 feet away, blow the whistle. Make the pitch rise and fall so it’s easier for them to recognize.

Whistle Training3

Reinforcing with Food
Immediately get some food and call the dog’s name in an excited tone. Always whistle first, then say their name. New cues should come before old ones to help the dog learn faster.
The moment the dog returns, reward them with food.

Whistle Training4

Consistent Whistle Recall
Whistle training is straightforward—most dogs react even on the first try. To keep it reliable, always use food as a reward. If you have multiple dogs, assign each dog its own whistle pattern.
