Easing Noise Anxiety
Is your dog scared of thunder, fireworks, or other loud sounds? Use counter-conditioning to pair scary noises with yummy treats. Play a “Bang-Bang Game” to help them get used to big noises.

Introducing the Teeter-Totter
Step on one side of a teeter-totter (or see-saw). Lure the dog onto it with treats. When the dog steps on, reward immediately.
Next time, raise the board about an inch (2.5 cm) off the ground, then guide the dog on again.

Turning Fear into Treat
Let the board drop to the ground, making a noise that might startle your dog. As soon as they hear it, give them a treat.
Keep repeating. Each time they hear the “bang,” immediately offer a treat.

Positive Noise Associations
Your dog will eventually get excited when they hear a “bang.” Counter-conditioning is the most effective way to reduce fear, but move at a slow pace so it stays below your dog’s fear threshold.
