Bell for Going Out

Bell for Going Out1

Bell Can “speak”
When your dog wants to go out, have them ring a bell so you know they need a potty break or fresh air.

Bell for Going Out2

Getting Their Attention
Hang a bell on the doorknob. Smear a bit of peanut butter on it and jingle it, encouraging the dog to lick or nudge it. Say, “Bell, ring!”

Building the Habit
Whenever the dog makes it ring, say “Good job!” and give them a treat. Repeat for a few days.

Bell for Going Out4

Stepping Outside
Put on the leash and get them excited for a walk. Then stop at the door and encourage them to ring the bell.
It may take time, but the second they make the bell sound, open the door and go out. This time, the reward is going outside instead of food.

A Week to Learn
The faster you respond to the bell early on, the quicker your dog will learn. Most dogs can pick it up within a week.
