Focus Starts With Eye Contact
Focus is the foundation of all training, and achieving focus starts with eye contact. Pick a time when the dog is relaxed and there are no distractions (including other dogs).

Drawing Their Gaze
Hold a treat near your dog’s nose.
Say “Look…” or “Focus…” while moving the treat toward your eyes, maintaining eye contact. If they glance away, repeat the cue.

Building Duration
Once you have 2 seconds of eye contact, move the treat from your face to your dog’s mouth as a reward. Gradually increase the time.
Eventually, use just your finger to get their attention before giving the treat.

Quick Mastery
Most dogs learn this skill quickly, and it’s very useful. Within a week, your dog will be much better at making eye contact, though it may only last a few seconds.
