Come home to find garbage everywhere? Train your dog to avoid rummaging in the trash.
Use a surprise method or block off the can so your dog learns that trash diving isn’t worth the trouble.

The Surprise Shake
When your dog starts digging in the trash, creep up and suddenly shake the can! This startling noise scares them off.
Confusing the Culprit
Act puzzled, as if you don’t know where the noise came from—ask, “What happened?” Let the dog think the scary sound came from the trash itself.
Then guide them to the bench, reward with a treat or gentle pats.
Discouraging Trash Diving
Success depends on how sensitive your dog is to noise. Some dogs won’t be scared enough by the can-rattle, but many will avoid the trash after a few tries.
