Bench Benifits
Bench training helps both adult dogs and puppies gain confidence. Dogs naturally enjoy higher vantage points, which makes them feel more secure.
A bench becomes their “base,” a safe spot they can freely occupy. So, teach your dog to hop onto the bench on command.

Up on the Bench
Hold a treat near the dog’s nose. Say “Up on the bench” as you slowly lift your hand above the bench. Keep giving small treats to motivate the dog to follow your hand and climb up.

Fatastic Experience
The moment the dog steps onto the bench, reward them immediately with treats, praise, and petting. Show them that being on the bench is a fantastic experience.

Staying Put and Coming Down
Once the dog is on the bench, they should “stay there” until you give permission to get down. Say “Off” while lightly tapping their leg or neck to cue them to dismount.

Distance Commands Made Easy
When your dog gets better at this, try commanding them from a distance—”Up on the bench!” Then you can just raise one arm as a signal. Reward them with a treat for climbing up.

Becoming Bench-Confident
If you link the bench to treats or affection, your dog will quickly master this skill. Sometimes, they might jump onto the bench without even waiting for your command!
