Gentle Tug of War
Many dogs (though not all) enjoy a good game of tug—it taps into their natural instincts. Try playing gently so you don’t frighten them away.

Spark Interest
Show the toy, then hide it behind your back, pretending it’s a living creature.
Pull the toy out from behind you. If the dog lunges for it, move it away. The toy should move away from the dog, not toward them.

Reward the Catch
Once the dog catches the toy, shake it lightly from side to side, not front to back.
After a few seconds, let go of the toy so the dog “wins.” Celebrate their victory, and praise them while they play.

Build Healthy Play Drive
Some breeds (like terriers or herding dogs) have strong prey drives, but most dogs enjoy tugging. The more often you play, the more this drive develops.
