Clear Command
Whenever you don’t want your dog to eat or even go near something, say “Leave it.”

Treat On Floor
Place a treat on the ground. With a firm voice, say “Leave it.” If the dog tries to grab it, be ready to cover the treat with your hand.

Reward Hesitation
If your dog starts eating anyway, say “No” and cover the food. Repeat until the dog hesitates for a second or two. Then say “Good job!” and give them a different treat from your pocket.

Encourage Focus Over Temptation
Your dog will eventually pause and look to you instead of lunging for the item. Reward even slight hesitation.
You can use “Leave it” for anything: a sandwich, a cat, or something else you don’t want your dog near.
