Keep Out of the Kitchen

Keep Out of the Kitchen1

Kitchen is Boundary
Teach your dog to stay behind certain lines—like the kitchen threshold—so they learn where they can and can’t go.

Baby Gate Helps
Set up a baby gate at the kitchen entrance. Say “Stay” before you walk away, then quickly return to give your dog a treat.

Lower the Barrier
Replace the baby gate with a lower barrier, like a board. Repeat the “stay and get a treat” process, gradually increasing the time they must stay put.

Reinforcing Boundaries
Keep lowering the barrier. If the dog jumps over it, tell them “Out,” lead them back, and start over. Only reward correct behavior.
Another option is placing a bench at the boundary. If the dog sits on the bench, they’re less likely to cross the line.

Be Patient
Results vary by dog. Some naturally respect boundaries, while others will test limits. Consistency and patience are crucial.
