Crate Time (Sleeping)1

Prepare A Den
Dogs naturally like den-like spaces where they feel safe and comfortable. A crate helps protect your dog, keeps them secure when traveling, and offers comfort in unfamiliar places. It also eases a puppy’s transition to a new home.

Crate Time (Sleeping)2

Make the Crate Cozy
You can bring items from the dog’s old crate, such as water, toys, a toy stuffed with peanut butter, a ticking clock, or a warm water bottle. Keep the crate near your bed for the first few nights.

Smooth Bedtime Routine
Before bedtime, tire your dog out and let them use the bathroom. You can offer water again near dawn.
Leave treats in the crate so they enter on their own.

Positive Reinforcement in the Crate
Close the crate door gently and crouch near it so your dog knows you’re there.
If your dog barks or whines, don’t let them out immediately. Wait until they’re quiet to open the door so they learn barking won’t get them out.

Embracing the Crate
Most dogs quickly learn to love their crate. They’ll go there when they want alone time, like during noisy gatherings or when lots of kids are around. If they go in, don’t disturb them.
